IDYLWOOD STABLES offers instruction in a variety of riding styles (hunters, dressage, cross country), with an emphasis on equitation. In addition to riding classes, students have the opportunity to learn basic through advanced care of horses to encourage independent horsemanship (see Camps).
Our instructors (see Staff) are fully qualified with years of experience coaching beginner through advanced students. Our limited student to instructor ratio maximizes attention to each individual. Additionally, our classes are designed so that students of a comparable level are grouped together, allowing the more experienced to advance.
Borrowing heavily from Pony Club's concept of total horsemanship, each level of instruction has a specific set of goals that students must master before progressing on to the next level. Students requiring additional practice to move up to the next level are encouraged to ride outside of class, and lesson horses are available for lease for this purpose.
All incoming students are required to take one private class for the purpose of evaluating their individual riding levels. Students with no prior experience are exempt from this evaluation. Private or semi-private lessons are required until the fundamentals of steering and stopping have been mastered.
Idylwood students have the option of participating in local and regional horse shows. Many of our students are competitive on the different show circuits, and all students are welcome to attend horse shows with the Stable, whether as participants or spectators.
As part of the lesson program, Idylwood regularly schedules guided cross-country rides that include natural jumps and water complexes. The Stable is in the process of constructing a GAG through Novice cross-country course.
